CLASS OF 1960 50-YEAR REUNION, OCT. 15-17 Hi all! This update - September 2nd Once again, here is an updated version of the reunion plans. There are no substantive things here, just more information about possible activities, more names of attendees, menu choices for the Saturday night dinner, breakdown of anticipated costs (sorry about that part) and updates on how to give the Horace Greeley Scholarship Fund. This will probably be the last significant revision to this site, so you won't have to put up with more messages from me. Questions/responses still gladly received of course.
SO, WHO WILL BE THERE??? Well, so far here are the responses from those who are planning on attending, and also those who may attend. This is as of September 2nd. Maybe you will see someone on the list whom you have really wanted to see again. October is your chance! I will try to keep this list current. Please note that this list is constantly changing, and while I do my best to keep it current, it is probably wrong the moment I publish it, especially with respect to spouses, as that part changes often. It's just the "nature of the beast," so to speak. So, if I have missed something, be sure to notify me and I will fix it ASAP.

of our reunions thus far. By my count, there are 60 classmates so far,
to include 21 folks who have not
been to previous reunions, so it should be a very special time. People
are
all pretty enthusiastic about the way things are shaping up so far.
So, if you haven't made your mind up yet, take a look at that list and think
who is on there you have really wanted to see again -- October will be your
chance!
MAY ATTEND Carlos Ballantyne Bob Burch Connie Creamer (Sheppard) Penny Clark (Nichols) Barbara Marks Karen Reagan Asher Sellner Karen Turner (Judd) Peter Schnall
WE ALSO HAVE SOME OF OUR BELOVED FORMER TEACHERS PLANNING TO ATTEND - SO FAR ED STARK, JACK BEHONEK, AND ROE HALPER HAVE CONFIRMED AND AL LINDSAY HOPES TO ATTEND AS WELL. I SENT A NOTE TO ADRIAN MCGUIRE AS WELL, BUT NO RESPONSE YET. IF YOU ARE IN TOUCH WITH FORMER TEACHERS, PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY KNOW THEY ARE WANTED AT THE REUNION!
OK, HERE IS THE PLAN FOR THIS UPDATE: All the basic information about meals, reservations, memory book and so forth is down below, under the line that looks like moving lightning. Here, I am just going to put new things, additions, and updates. I hope that makes sense. Here goes: COSTS:
I don't want to make this update all about money, but the types of activities preferred by most do have an associated cost. However, try not to think of it as a one-time big expenditure -- think of it as amortized over 50 years. So, the $75/person for the Saturday night dinner is really just a buck-fifty a year over the last half-century. Feel better now? Anyway, here's the rundown.
Friday night buffet at the Holiday Inn, 7 p.m. - 11 p.m -- $25 a head (That's just 50 cents a year - what a bargain!) Saturday night dinner, 6:30 cocktail hour, 7:30 - 9:00 (and beyond for those wishing to hang out at the bar) - $75 a person. Both functions will have a cash bar. Menu information is outlined below. We are picking up the cost for any of our teachers who show up for dinner, whether they want us to or not. Breakfast is on your own - no formal gatherings planned. Holiday Inn has a nice breakfast/brunch menu. Saturday picnic at Peter Davidson's home - $15 for one person, $25 for a couple. Memory Book - Sue McKinley and Carolyn Grieco have put together an impressive document, nearing 100 pages now. Steve Blue has added a section from those who served in the military. The book, in color, will be available for those wishing to purchase one for around $20. There will probably be an electronic version (PDF) for around $10. Still a work in progress. Many classmates have already sent a deposit to Peter. If not, your check will be welcome at any of the functions, Friday or Saturday. Cash is always welcome as well. Holiday Inn function payments should be made separately from the others. If you have already sent in your $75 deposit, that of course goes toward the Holiday Inn buffet and dinner. If you haven't, please do so ASAP so Peter can give the Inn a final count and get our finances straight with them. Pete has done a lot of heavy lifting on this part, so anything we can do to smooth the process will be a big help. Menus
The dinner Saturday night will include the following choices: chilled selections: -mixed baby greens w. various dressings -marinated tomatoes w. mozzarella and basil -seasonal fresh-cut fruits Hot stuff -lemon pepper chicken -medallions of pork Bordeaux -fillet of salmon w. dill sauce penne a'la vodka carving board -top round of roast beef
The Picnic - Peter has arranged for a barbecue cook to prepare hamburgers/hot dogs and there will be beer/wine/pop, as well as macaroni salad, cole slaw, and potato salad. If you haven't already told Peter if you are attending the picnic, now is a good time, so we can be sure to have the right amount of provisions on hand. Bottom line: No one should go hungry this weekend!
CLASS GIFT You can review the information about the class gift to the Horace Greeley Scholarship Fund below. This is of course completely voluntary for class members. Let me just stress again that the Fund provides help based on need alone. Here is the link again if you want to find out more. http://www.hgsf.org/index.html Peter has arranged with the Chappaqua Rotary to match the first $2000 that the class gives. You can give directly via the website, using PayPal, or print out a donor card and contribute by mail. DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. In either case, be sure to state that your gift is in the name of the Class of '60, so they can keep track of it, and we can show Rotary our total donation. There will be contribution envelopes available at the reunion as well. We already have almost $1000 pledged, so we are confident of meeting and surpassing the $2000 benchmark.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: SEVERAL FOLKS HAVE SUGGESTED SOME ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES, AND THEY ARE ALL UNDER ACTIVE CONSIDERATION. THE VARIOUS COMMITTEE PEOPLE ARE MAKING SOME PROVISIONAL PLANS, DEPENDING ON CLASS RESPONSE. SO, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN DOING SOME OF THESE THINGS, PLEASE LET GAY MAYER KNOW, AS HE IS PRETTY MUCH COORDINATING PROGRAM FUNCTIONS. IF YOU WOULD INFO ME AND PETER AND KEN ON YOUR MESSAGES, THAT WOULD BE GREAT. PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING UNDER CONSIDERATION WOULD BE VOLUNTARY AND IN SOME CASES RUN PARALLEL TO OTHER EVENTS. FOR INSTANCE, REID REYNOLDS IS ORGANIZING A TIME FOR THOSE INTERESTED TO MEET AND TALK ABOUT HOW GROWING UP IN CHAPPAQUA HAS INFLUENCED THEIR LIVES. THAT WOULD MOST LIKELY HAPPEN AT THE PICNIC AND BE FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO PARTICIPATE, WITH NO "AUDIENCE" REQUIRED. THE POINT IS THAT THE MAIN ACTIVITY OF THE REUNION IS FOR US TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT, TALK, REMINISCE, AND OTHERWISE JUST ENJOY THE FELLOWSHIP. NOTHING WILL INTERFERE WITH THAT! THAT SAID, HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT MAY INTEREST YOU. MAKE YOUR FEELINGS KNOWN! 1. SCHOOL TOUR - AT THE LAST REUNION WE ARRANGED TO MEET WITH THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR A TOUR OF "TODAY'S GREELEY." 2. TOUR OF CHAPPAQUA - WE CAN HAVE A BUS TOUR OF THE TOWN IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE CHANGES AND GET SOME LOCAL LORE 3. "SHOW AND TELL" HERE IS A NOTE FROM KEN NYE, WHO HAS GIVEN THIS A LOT OF THOUGHT. HE IS THE EMCEE, SO HE IS THE NATURAL GUY TO HEAD THIS UP. Dear Class of 1960, A number of you have asked if time could be provided during the weekend in which those members of our class who acquired interesting new skills or developed talents during the last fifty years could share those skills or talents with other members of the class. We thought this could be good fun. So we are going to schedule time on Saturday morning and at the picnic for those people who have things to share. Understand that attendance at these presentations would be optional. People would go only to whatever might interest them, (or to none at all). So, if you have a skill or talent that you would like to share with the rest of the class, please use the form below, and send it to Gay Mayer (gamayer@aol..com) before Sept. 15th. We will find places in at the Holiday Inn or the picnic to fit this all together- thus the need to reply “soon”. One more thing… At the banquet Saturday night we will have a table on which people who have published books, articles or papers can put them out for other people to skim and possibly track down the author for a conversation. So if you have something like this, bring it along Saturday night. If you would like to offer them for sale – this would be yours to manage. This is going to be fun! (We hope) Ken Nye, for The Planning Team PRESENTATION FORM (email to gamayer@aol.com)

4. AUCTION/DOOR PRIZES PIGGY-BACKING ON KEN'S NOTE ABOVE, WE KNOW THAT SEVERAL CLASSMATES HAVE PUBLISHED BOOKS, CREATED SOME FINE ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY, AND SIMILAR THINGS. WE ARE HOPING TO GET DONATIONS OF THESE THINGS FOR AN AUCTION TO BENEFIT THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND. CLEM LAGALA HAS AGREED TO BE THE AUCTIONEER, AND SEEING CLEM IN ACTION SHOULD BE AN ATTRACTION IN ITSELF! MORE TO FOLLOW, BUT THIS WILL PROBABLY HAPPEN AT THE SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER. WE HAVE ALSO STOLEN A BRILLIANT IDEA FROM SUE MCKINLEY CARPENTER'S HUBBY, CHARLIE. AT HIS LAST REUNION THEY HAD A WOODEN BOWL AND ALL THE CLASSMATES BURNED THEIR NAME INTO IT WITH A WOOD-BURNING IRON. THE PRODUCT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND WE ARE HOPING TO DO THE SAME AND PERHAPS AUCTION THAT BOWL OFF. 5. CHAPPAQUA MEMORIES DISCUSSION GROUP AS MENTIONED ABOVE, REID IS ORGANIZING THIS. IF THERE IS ENOUGH INTEREST, WE WILL PROBABLY DO THIS AT THE PICNIC. PERHAPS MANY OF YOU LOOK BACK ON GROWING UP IN CHAPPAQUA AND ATTENDING OUR FINE SCHOOLS AS HAVING HAD A LASTING EFFECT ON YOUR LIVES, EITHER FOR GOOD OR MAYBE NOT SO GOOD. (IT COULD HAPPEN....) ANYWAY, FOR THOSE SO INTERESTED, WE COULD HAVE A ROUND-TABLE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE SUBJECT. I SURE WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE. BE ASSURED, IT'S VOLUNTARY AND WON'T BRING OTHER ACTIVITIES TO A HALT. LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE PART OF IT.
Here's an issue separate from the rest --- If you are coming alone and are looking for someone to share a room with and split the cost, just let me know (Dave) and I will try to match folks up by putting you in touch with each other to work out the details. I know of at least one female classmate interested in finding a "roommate."
And finally -- Who's to blame for all this? Well, here is a picture of some of us. Five members of your committee met and worked feverishly at Sue McKinley Carpenter's lake house in Pennsylvania. As you can see, we did have some refreshments available to relieve the intense pressure. Sad to say, some of those who have also been working on this, such as Ann Hill, Steve Blue, and Ken Nye were not there. Pictured, from left to right, Peter Davidson, Carolyn Grieco, Sue McKinley, Gay Mayer, Dave Williams. (You may direct complaints to any of us so that we may promptly ignore them.)
And here is all the stuff previously published if you want further details and information. Program/Emcee Ken Nye will be our emcee for the dinner Saturday night. Ken, Allan, Gay, and a couple other people are working on some program events for the dinner and/or picnic. Nothing extravagant, as we all know that just the time together to visit and catch up is what we all treasure. But, we expect to have a time to share memories, perhaps some brief presentations (Ken has agreed to read some of his poetry, for instance.) Maybe we will call it "Show and Tell" -- so anyway if you have a good story to tell, some talent you would like to show off, or just some comments you want to make, there will be a place for that. Final plans to follow......
On-site Coordinators We had a lot of volunteers for this, and Ann (Hill) Connelly will be working with Peggy Dickenson, Cathie Smith, Lydia (Lockridge) Morrongiello, and Lorraine (Price) Muth to handle things at the Holiday Inn. One or more of them will be available there to help get arrivees pointed in the right direction and coordinate with the Inn staff. If anyone would like to work in conjunction with these folks, helping arrange transportation from Westchester County airport to the hotel, that would be a big help. It will be just a matter of keeping track of arrival times for those needing transport and then finding classmates willing to pop over there and pick them up. It's about a 15 minute drive, and all you would need is a cell phone and a clipboard. (If you have a whistle and a stopwatch to go with it, they would convey an air of authority, but it's not necessary.)
Memory Book Carolyn Grieco and Sue (McKinley) Carpenter are doing a bang-up job on this and plan to make the book available in both "hard copy" and electronic versions. Sue tells us that they are up to 78 pages so far, and she wants to publish it with color pictures, so it sounds like something we can really treasure. There will be a reasonable cost for the book to cover expenses, probably in the 15-20 dollar range. Once this is firmed up, we will publish the information here. In the meantime, if you have not made your input, the ladies are still accepting them, but that won't be the case for much longer, as there is some lead time connected with publication. As I have mentioned before, you would be surprised to know how many classmates have thought about you and wondered how (and what) you are doing. This is a great chance to let everyone know what's going on in your life. Steve Blue is also working on a section for military vets to recount their service. If you are a vet and haven't responded to Steve, now is the time. (Click on the names to send an email.)
Class Gift This is a new activity for us this time around. There were lots of ideas, and after consultation with lots of interested parties, we have settled on a cash gift to the Horace Greeley Scholarship Fund (HGSF). Peter Davidson, who is active with the Rotary in Chappaqua, has arranged with Rotary for a matching gift. If we as a class are able to get contributions of $2000 (or more) they will match the first $2000. The scholarship fund has actually been around since 1946 and has been helping students, based on need, since that time. The fund received a big boost in 1990, when Mr. Barlow left about $500,000 in his will. You can read about the history and administration of the HGSF at http://www.hgsf.org/index.html. It may seem unusual to us to imagine people in rich, prosperous Chappaqua with financial need, but in fact that is the case for many. I (Dave Williams) have a special place in my heart for this fund in that, like many of us, I didn't really have the money for college, and got a grant of $250 from HGSF. While that doesn't sound like much by today's standards, in 1960 that $250 actually paid my first year of fees at the College of Forestry at Syracuse. Without it, I would not have been able to attend college. I am not saying that attending college is the only road to success, but in my case it made all the difference, and I am grateful for the chance to give back and help today's students. I hope you will consider doing likewise. Peter is working with Rotary to arrange for various means to contribute, to include credit card, PayPal, and of course that old standby -- cash. Hold off on any immediate contributions until we get it set up so you can give in the name of the Class of '60.
Photography Coordinator If there is someone who would like to be a point of contact for pictures, that will be a big contribution. No doubt there will be lots of cameras clicking away. People can send pics to me, and I will post them on the reunion memory page in November. But, if there were someone who could make sure everyone gets into a few pictures and that all our events get covered, then we can be certain of great memories and images for all to see. If you are ambitious and actually want to be THE OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER that would be even better, but it sure isn't required.
OK, you ask, what if I have questions -- who do I contact and who is doing what? Well, here are your answers....

Here are
the details, schedule, and reservations information: We have booked a block of rooms at
the Holiday Inn in Mount Kisco. The rate is $119 per night. Please make
reservation either by calling them at 888-452-5771 or on line at
www.hudsonvalleymanor.com.
Mention that you are part of the HGHS Reunion Class of ‘60. As
of August 10th there were still rooms available, and Holiday Inn is very
cooperative about getting more, but that won't last forever, as they fill up
pretty fast, so get your reservation in ASAP if you have not already done so. The current thinking is that we
will serve a buffet dinner at the Holiday Inn on Friday night (approx cost $25
per person). Saturday morning will be casual as some like to sleep in while
others love to get out and greet the day, check out the goings on in town and so
forth. There will be a buffet breakfast both Saturday and Sunday (about $50
combined). By lunchtime weather permitting, we would hope to gather at Peter’s
home for an informal afternoon get together and picnic filled with time to both
talk and perhaps play. There should be time to check out your old neighborhood
and also see how Chappaqua has changed. In the evening, dinner will be a festive affair at the Inn
(about $65) with some music and undoubtedly (!) lots of storytelling…. (maybe
even including exaggeration....) What we need now is your response
– preferably by email to Peter – "YES, NO, MAYBE." Holiday Inn has reserved a
block of rooms. If you plan to attend and have not already made reservations, we
recommend you do so ASAP, as they tend to fill up fast there. Tell us the
days you plan to be around. This will give us a chance to get more detailed
about the flow of activities and planning for meals. The hotel has asked that we
secure the reservation with a deposit. We would ask that you mail to
Peter a check for $75.00 as a deposit for the planned events- made out to
HGHS Class of ’60. This will be a big help. That’s the second step. Mail to -- Peter Davidson, 20
Brevoort Rd., Chappaqua, NY 10514 Fourth step is to talk to some of
your friends from the class and make plans to gather together in October. The
class has been getting smaller. I guess that is inevitable – which makes
opportunities like this that much more important. We really look forward to
hearing from you – soon! Dave is at

are in contact with classmates, make sure they know about the reunion and
this webpage. If you have any clues about the whereabouts of missing
people listed below, let us know, or contact them and let them know.
