HERD IN THE HALLS II - FEBRUARY 2000

THE REUNION PLANS ARE IN MOTION

February, 2000 - Reunion 2000 is on. Saturday, October 14th is the date, so mark your calendars now! Tentative plans include a tour of the high school Saturday morning, hopefully guided by current students, a picnic at Peter and Fran Davidson’s starting around noon, and a sit-down dinner at Traveler’s Rest in Millwood that evening. For those arriving Friday, there may be some sort of casual get-together available at one of the local restaurants or at the hotel. As you make your plans to attend, please let me know so I can pass numbers on to the various planners. Speaking of planners, now is the time to volunteer. Ken and Anne Nye are making the arrangements for the high school tour, Peter and Fran will handle the picnic and set-up for the dinner, and I will manage numbers and publicity to classmates. We could use someone to organize a brief program at the dinner and one or more folks to research possible lodging arrangements and get some rooms reserved. Give me a call or note if you are interested. Also, let me know if you plan to attend. I have already published a web page with information, and will continue to update it as we nail down details. You can access it at http://members.tripod.com/DaveWilliams/reunion_2000.htm If you have to type that into your web browser, please note that the "DaveWilliams" portion is all one word and case-sensitive.

NOTES FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY

Beth Porter sent me an e-mail yesterday that her mom had passed on after a long battle with cancer. Her mom was well known to us all as she often taught at Greeley. Beth says she remembered those times fondly.

Another sad item to pass along. Sue (Dahlgren) Driscoll died last year. I am sorry, but I do not have any details at this time. RIP.

Carole (Odiorne) Munro writes that she and hubby Dave are in the process of moving to Sarasota, and they will be living only about three miles from Peg Dickenson! For the time being they are splitting their time between Pennsylvania and Florida. I think she is in Florida right now. New address appears elsewhere in the newsletter.

Lynne (Dennison) Fitzhugh has lots of good news to report.  She recently realized a life-long goal and had her first book published.  It is entitled The Labradorians: Voices From the Land of Cain and is available through Amazon.com.  You can see lots more news about Lynne and her family on the "In the Meantime" page.

Carolyn (Grieco) Mastin just wrote that her parents, Andy and Marie, died within ten days of each other in November.  They were married for 62 years.  Our thoughts are with Carolyn.

Lynne (

Doug Hoeft is still serving in the Illinois legislature. He recalled that back in 7th grade, Mr. Russo (remember him?) gave them an assignment to write what they would be doing at the turn of the century. Doug started off saying that at the turn of the century he would be 58 years old. Mr. Russo didn’t like the math.

Sue (McKinley) Carpenter was among those attending Jeanne Irwin’s 80th birthday in Chappaqua. She said it was a glorious fall day and the event, held at the Kittle House was just wonderful.

Lydia (Lockridge) Morrengiello recently retired after teaching music for 33 years and is now in real estate on the north shore of Long Island, where she lives. She also mentioned that she recently talked with Bill Holmes and he says there are busloads of visitors driving through Chappaqua to see the house the Clintons purchased.

Jim Granger and wife Carolyn live in Annapolis and have two children; Josh, 26 and Katie, 23. Jim is an electrical engineer with DoD. They recently traveled to Bolivia to visit with Katie who is an agronomist with the Peace Corps.

Ann Bliss has wound down her trial practice, as, like Ken Nye (see last newsletter) she has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. She says she and Ken have a very active and enthusiastic support group, and urges any other classmates so afflicted to contact them. She says her symptoms are pretty manageable with medication. Nevertheless, she is still very active and enjoying Boulder, where her two sons also live. Lots of time with granddaughter Lindsey. There is lots more info from Ann on the "In the Meantime" page of our website.

Kit (Thomas) Weiss has a lot of information on that web page as well. Interestingly, even though she was with the Class of ’59 for most of school (she was ill for most of her senior year) she says now that she really feels closer to the Class of ’60 due to our news and updates. She did a lot of traveling as a Navy wife, but says she is now settled in her "forever" house. She also says this is their fourth "forever" house. I know that feeling.

Dick Howe has retired from Arrow Shirts, but continues in the field as an independent rep for men’s apparel lines out of Kansas City. He has a new address too.

Eddie Reardon continues to correspond regularly with copious observations on a wide variety of subjects. He is already preparing for the reunion, and sent me four (count them, four) tapes with rock ‘n roll music from 1960. We will all get to hear them at the picnic, and dinner. It’s about eight hours of music.

Mr. Adrian McGuire, one of our 4th grade teachers sent a very nice note and update. He is still active in education, supervising student teachers from Fordham and Pace Universities. Summer weekends he spends at their lake house in Milford, PA.

Well, that is all I have. I hope I did not leave anyone out. If so, it was unintentional. You will find some additional information and bits and pieces that I post as they come in on the "In the Meantime" web page. The URL is http://members.tripod.com/DaveWilliams/inthe.htm

You can get to the rest of our pages from that one. Those of you who are on-line can check out reunion planning progress at the "Reunion 2000" page. If you are on-line, but haven’t sent me your e-mail, please do so and I will post it on our e-mail page. Ain’t technology wunnerful?

While we are on the reunion subject, I urge you to invite any of our former teachers with whom you may be in contact. Peter says that at Fran’s class reunion, several of the teachers attended the picnic and really enjoyed it. Of course the teachers who are reading this now should consider themselves invited!

Speaking of teachers, here is a picture Jim Buckner sent. It’s Mr. Allard, who taught us in 5th grade, and on his left it looks like Locke Bogart, but I can’t figure out who the other kid is. (Tommy Stephens maybe?)

Here is another one he sent. He says that is Denny Joy in the middle, and it looks like Grant Schroeder in the background. Also from our Roaring Brook days.

He sent a couple more, and I will post them on the "In the Meantime" page.
